I’ve talked about the pressure to do it all and how that pressure is lying to us. But now, I want to take it a step further, because many women hear that and still think, “But I’m still so busy…” Being busy isn’t always the problem. Misalignment is. You can have a full calendar and still feel grounded. And you can have a light schedule and still feel overwhelmed. This is about learning how to tell the difference and how to start choosing alignment without blowing up your life.
What being ‘busy’ actually looks like
Let’s talk about ‘busy’ honestly. Busy is:
- Saying yes out of guilt, fear, or expectation
- Moving fast but feeling behind
- Checking boxes without asking why
- Living in reaction mode instead of intention
Now that we know what busy actually is, it’s important to talk about the emotional cost of being busy. I know for me, busy feels heavy. It feels frantic, and like I’m constantly catching up. It’s like I’m doing a lot, but it rarely feels satisfying.
There’s no shame in this. Most women don’t choose busy on purpose. We’re rewarded for it. Praised for it and expected to handle it. To bring this into perspective, I want you to ask yourself why you’re doing everything you’re doing right now. Most of us can’t answer this clearly. We’re just doing it.
What being aligned actually feels like
Aligned might feel like a perfect routine, endless free time, or a life without responsibility. But aligned is actually:
- Your actions match your values
- You understand your season and capacity
- You can explain why something matters to you
- You feel more calm even when life is full
See the difference? In my life, this has looked like cutting something out of my life, not because it was bad, but because it no longer fit. Alignment creates confidence because your choices are anchored. You stop second-guessing everything when you’re clear on your priorities.
How to tell which one you’re in
Quick self-check. Ask yourself:
- “If I stopped doing this, what am I afraid would happen?”
- “Does this move me toward the life I say I want or just help me survive this week?”
- “Am I doing this because it’s meaningful or because it’s familiar?”
If you’re still not sure, there are some physical cues you can look for. Busy often feels tense, rushed, and tight. Alignment often feels steady, grounded, and clear even when challenging.
Your answers don’t have to be pretty. They just need to be true. Being honest with yourself here is the key to understanding where you are and what changes you can make.
Choose one commitment to evaluate this week. Don’t quit it immediately, but spend the week questioning it, honestly. Maybe it’s a routine you resent, a social obligation that drains you, or a goal you’re chasing because you used to want it. Ask yourself, “Is this serving the season I’m in right now?”.
Alignment isn’t about doing less. It’s about doing what matters. A calmer, more confident life doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from being intentional.
