How Caring for Yourself Impacts Your Whole Life With Sara Amos

caring for yourself

Caring for yourself as a mom, woman, and busy human in the world can feel like a tall task. Let’s rewrite that! I want to do just that with my conversation with my friend and client, Sara Amos. She is the founder of Sparrow Creek Counseling in Nashville where she helps people navigate loss, trauma, and daily anxiety. Her mission is to create a safe and supportive space for healing, and she brings that same care and intentionality to her own health jouney.

In our conversation she shares her story, including the challenges and surprises along the way, and how it affected her family and work. We talk about the link between physical and mental health and why investing in yourself isn’t just about appearance, it’s about showing up fully in every area of your life. Here’s some of the questions I asked her.

What led you to start focusing on your health?

Sarah never tried a diet or even considered nutrition until into her 30s and that was prompted by a search for what was causing her migraines. She started really leaning into whole food nutrition around then and found that she felt a lot better in many ways.

More recently, she had 3 babies between the ages of 37 and 42 and quickly realized that what used to work – both with food and exercise – just didn’t work as well. Before turning to coaching, she felt completely out of touch with who she was before from a nutrition and exercise standpoint.

What are some of the biggest shifts or habits you’ve made when caring for yourself?

The biggest change Sara has made has been her relatrions with exercise and movement. Not just a more solid commitment but trying new things – strength training and HIIT type exercise had never been on her radar but they have been really impactful with her energy and shifting hermindset to what she can do with her body.

The hardest part has been planning and forethought that you have to get used to when making changes. Her personal life is very fly by the seat of her pants and so that has been an adjustment but also one of the best parts. Now that she knows she has to plan or think ahead, it has been much easier to stay on track and hit the daily goals.

How have the changes to your physical health supported your work and family?

Sara said that definitely her sleep and energy had improved so much and that’s been a huge help as a business owner and mom to 3 small children. She’s also really grateful to be figuring out some of these priorities now while her children are small so it will fit more naturally into her family as they get older.

When it comes to work, Sara said she sometimes spends months trying to help her clients see their value and that they deserve to prioritize their pain and their needs. Before coaching, she wasn’t always practicing what she was preaching. She feels like now she can more honestly tell them that taking care of themselves is worth the effort.

Why do you think it’s important for women to give themselves grace as they’re making changes?

This comes up in Sara’s world alot. Most of us do not have much tolerance for ‘the process’ but the foundational aspect of growth is care. Flowers will not bloom unless they have been rooted in healthy soil and given plenty of water and light. Taking care of ourselves with rest and patience and kindness are necessary to long term success.

Whether you’re looking for encouragement to start your own health journey, inspiration to keep going, or a reminder of how connected our bodies and minds really are, I hope this was helpful!
