Your eating mindset around the holidays is probably not the best. You aren’t alone in this, I was there too. I know this can be a difficult topic for many and there are often a lot of emotions tied to this topic.
When other people would be so excited for the holiday foods offered, I couldn’t fully enjoy the fun. I constantly told myself things like “you shouldn’t have that or that’s too much”. Neither of which were true but I believed those thoughts and it kept me from embracing the joy of holiday meals.
So how do we master our mindset around holiday eating?
First let’s start off with where your current mindset is around holiday eating. Think about this question seriously because we can’t move forward until we have acknowledged where we are now. Awareness is always the first step in seeing changes and growth in your mindset.
Now, I want to give you practical ways to gain that positive mindset for your eating during the holidays and we have to understand a couple of things in order to do that.
The power of mindful eating
Mindful eating and depriving yourself from foods aren’t the same thing. Mindful eating means saying YES to things you really want and no to things you don’t. Because of the social pressure around food during the holidays this can be hard. Just remember that just because it’s there doesn’t mean you have to have it. You can say no and that’s ok! It’s not depriving yourself, instead it’s being mindful about your food choices so you’re set up for success and confidence in your food choices.
Creating a positive self-image
This one is tough! The best way to create a positive self image is with positive affirmations. These are more powerful than you know and can also be used to help your children as well. The things that we repeat the most to ourselves are the things we begin to believe so speak kindly to yourself and show yourself grace and compassion during the holidays the same way you do to others.
Creating realistic intentions
Take time to think through realistic intentions for yourself. As yourself, “How do I want to feel this holiday season?”, “What things are most important to me?”, “What things do I want to experience with my friends and family?”. Once you have made it clear what your intentions are you can set some goals around them.
I hope this gives you the confidence to walk into a meal with your family or holiday party and enjoy it and move on! I want nothing more than for each of us to go into the holiday season with a positive mindset around food!
