Losing weight means you have to restrict yourself, right? WRONG!
You’ve been taught that eating whatever you want is what got you into the position that you are now looking to lose weight. You think to yourself, if I had just not eaten that bowl of ice cream or extra piece of garlic bread, I wouldn’t be in this position.
Let me remind you that it takes MORE than eating to get you into a position where you now feel like you have weight to lose. Does food play a role, ABSOLUTELY! But so does what you drink, your activity level, your stress, your sleep, and the list goes ON AND ON!
If you are trying to lose weight and it requires you to cut out a whole food group (carbs, sugar, alcohol, etc.) then it’s not going to work, at least not for the long run! Why do you think so many people fail at reaching their weight loss goals? The number one reason I see is that they get sick of having to feel like “they can’t eat…” and they get frustrated, and give up.
I get it! It’s miserable when you feel like you can’t or shouldn’t eat something you want to. No one wants to skip an ice cream cone with their children or a glass of your favorite wine.
Instead of restriction, try this! Ask yourself – “how do I feel when I eat this?” and truly think about that. Do you feel satisfied? Does it make you bloated? Or do you feel nourished? That turns into “do I want to eat this or would I rather have xyz instead?”.
This will lead to a better mindset around food and not feeling like you can’t or shouldn’t eat the things you enjoy. Moderation is key! Eat what fuels your body but don’t restrict yourself from the things you enjoy, just enjoy them in moderation.
