When was the last time you did something that genuinely scared you? You know the things that are out of our comfort zones… starting a new health plan, making a change in your career, or taking that leap in your relationship. Or maybe… You haven’t in a while. And that’s exactly the problem. Comfort zones feel safe, but they slowly chip away at your confidence and potential.
A comfort zone is the routines, habits, and decisions that feel safe and familiar. And honestly, it’s where most people are currently and stay for most of their lives. The reason? It’s easy… it feels good to stay where you are and avoid the ‘hard’ things. But really, it only feels good short-term. In the long run, you are limiting your growth.
The cost of comfort
Staying in comfort zones has a cost. To most, it’s the loss of confidence, missed opportunities, and unfulfilled potential. For example, maybe you have a really great opportunity to meet up with some women in your area to connect. But because your comfort zone is at home hanging by yourself, you miss out on this cool event. Another example, your dream position opens up, but you know it will take hard work, an intense interview, and new surroundings… so you turn down the opportunity to participate.
How to break free
First, let me say that you can get out of your comfort zone. You can embrace hard things. And you absolutely can reach your goals. To start, take small micro-steps outside your comfort zone daily. These don’t have to be big things like attending every social event in town. Just start small with something every day. This will be uncomfortable, but reframe that thought. “I’m uncomfortable, but I’m growing.”
Tell someone about your goals or track your progress. This will help you take the steps even on the days when you really don’t want to. And lastly, to break free, you need to celebrate your wins. EVEN THE SMALL ONES! No matter the size, they all build confidence, and that’s exactly what you need to get out of your comfort zone.
Comfort zones are comfortable, but they are also quiet confidence killers. Growth lives on the other side of discomfort. It’s normal to feel nervous or scared. That’s actually a sign that you’re stretching yourself, and that’s good. This is the same mindset that helps in health, career, and relationships. Stepping out of your comfort zone builds confidence everywhere.
