Have you ever felt worried, concerned, or thought about all the negative possible outcomes about an area in your life? Have you ever felt stuck? If the answer is yes, then you've experienced fear. Fear is overwhelming and quite consuming as it tries to hijack every part of you. Fear affects us in our personal life and work life. Fear keeps us stuck in business!
In business, have you felt numb and unable to complete tasks? Do you have a fear of failure? Are you concerned that you are going to disappoint the people in your life? Do you have a fear of allowing others to see your hopes and dreams? Perhaps, you have a fear of comparison. Do they need to hear another voice or opinion? Is it possible for you to bring something valuable to the table?
Isn’t it interesting how we come up with endless scenarios of what could go wrong before we put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard? Before we’ve started anything, we’ve given ourselves permission to QUIT.
There is another way.
When we go from "I can't do this" to "I am capable," we start to push back the fear. Define the fear in your life. Find out where it is coming from and discover the root of the issue.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- Why am I in business?
- What is it about my business that fulfills me?
- What has the journey been like for me to get here to this place?
- What is my overall purpose?
Lean in to other people in this space of business ownership. Share your concerns and overwhelm. Talk about the fear you are experiencing. Learn and grow from one another. Problem-solve with other people. If you have too many things to take care of, break up your tasks into smaller parts. If you are running out of time during the week, set daily goals until you accomplish the work. Talk over your schedule and business issues with others. Share with the people in your life how you plan to overcome your fears and other problems as you continue to move the needle forward.
Don’t let comparison take over your dreams for your business. Here’s why:
- Your voice matters
- Your passion matters
- Your ideas matter
Millions of books have been written. But someone will learn from reading your book. New stores open up regularly. But your product is needed on the shelves. Everyone seems to have a podcast. But they haven’t heard your perspective.
Your business matters!
Here is a list of practical things/people to have in your life (an arsenal of sorts) when fear creeps in:
A quote wall
- Words of wisdom
A reminder list of goals you’ve already accomplished
A list of colleagues/mentors who can help you in specific areas of your life
- Someone who helps you with tech
- A person in finance
- A counselor
- Fellow creative
- A wise mentor/friend
- Mastermind group
What if you decide to wake up one day and instead of thinking of all the negative outcomes, you start to think in a positive manner? What if this all turns out okay? What if this ends up being a successful venture? What if you end up finding joy throughout this process?
You weren’t meant to do this alone. Find a friend. Join a group. Be a part of a team. Remind each other of this: When it comes to your business, tell fear to get out of the way!
