Overcoming self-doubt can be tricky. No one handled this better than my good friend, Haley. I met Haley when I lived in Arkansas. We had our first initial call where she talked about some areas where she wanted to see growth, where she wanted to gain confidence, and limiting beliefs that she had about herself. Then, we began to meet at a coffee shop every week for over a year.
The growth I saw in Haley over a year was huge. The way she would engage in conversation, the ways she talked about herself and how she led, her compassion and care for her employees and clients—it was all remarkable.
I wanted to allow Haley the opportunity to talk about her mindset journey. How she went from doubting the decisions she was making to being confident in them. How she has overcome self-doubt and views herself in a more positive light.
I know her candidness will be encouraging to you because we have all had those seasons where we feel doubt or negative thoughts creep in. Here’s what Haley had to say during our conversation.
A little about Haley
She and her family live in central Arkansas. She is a CPA and has been practicing public accounting for 10+ years. Haley has been married to her husband for 10 years, and they have 2 children. Her favorite things are sonic drinks, being outside with family, and journaling!
What was Haley’s mindset when we started working together?
Haley said that before she started coaching sessions with me, she would describe her mindset as overwhelmed and constant spirals of what-if scenarios. She had just bought a new business about 5 months before we first met. She was feeling lonely on the journey with her business venture, questioning every decision she made both personally and in work life. Haley said that everything felt heavy and she had no confidence that it would improve.
How did self-doubt show up in Haley’s daily life or business decisions?
Constant anxiety and being on edge was how Haley described self-doubt showing up in her life. That with negative self-talk and being hard on herself made her extremely moody and short-tempered. She would let these feelings of self-doubt spill over into her relationships with her family.
Was there a specific moment or breakthrough that Haley can point back to where she began to feel more confident?
Haley gradually started to feel more confident and take notice of those micro-moments in her day-to-day connections. She said the things I taught her and discussed in our sessions came to light during her conversations and made her feel more aware of where she could take note of any negative mindset and feel more self-aware about her goals.
Her mind had been so stuck for years in just doing the work and showing up every day that it started to take over her business. She was burning herself out so quickly. Once she realized all of this, she was able to turn her attention to her dreams and feel confident in that process.
How does Haley handle self-doubt or difficult days now compared to before?
Haley said, pausing. Giving herself a pep talk and a chance to think rationally instead of going into the negative spirals. She also makes sure she is checking in with herself mentally throughout the week so she can feel any feelings in the moment rather than letting them build up.
What advice would Haley give other women who feel stuck in self-doubt?
Haley said:
1. Mindset is everything! Positivity can start to turn things around!
2. Find someone or a group of people who can mentor you and help you navigate things, whatever the topic—career, life, parenting, marriage, etc.
3. Prayer and journaling.
Whether you’re an entrepreneur, professional, or someone working to build more confidence in your life, these valuable insights should help show you the power of mindset and coaching and what you can accomplish!
