Health is a vulnerable topic. When we think about being healthy we often think about being without things we love. What if I told you that doesn’t have to be the case? Healthy living without deprivation is possible for you!
I chatted with a good friend, Jamison, about this. She is the founder of Worley Nutrition Group and specializes in eating disorders, body image concerns, and sports nutrition. We met over 10 years ago and connected because of our passions for love and movement.
Jamison has immense knowledge on healthy living without deprivation. Let’s get into our conversation together!
What does “healthy living without deprivation” mean to you?
Jamison said in short, all food is fuel and eating in moderation and for intentionality is key. Her main focus has always been on educating people on the body and then letting them focus on how to fuel their body for the purpose needed.
For some, that can be building a better relationship with food, fueling for sport, fueling for a season of pregnancy or menopause… so many things. Viewing food as fuel is key so one does not deprive of certain fuel or nutrients that can turn into bigger issues.
Why do you think so many people equate healthy eating with restriction or dieting?
Society and the media – that’s what Jamison said. Society has taken it further to put numbrs on this when really it is finding what works best for your body.
How do you help clients navigate guilt or shame related to food choices?
Jamison said it completely depends on the person and what they are going through. Context is so important here. Guilt is put upon ourselves when we feel regret/sadness/remorse for something that we have done. Shame is the whole body response. The idea is to navigate guilt first so it does not spiral into shame.
What are some first steps for someone who wants to move away from restrictive diets?
EDUCATION! Jamison said education is so powerful. There is so much misinformation out there and just being able to learn about the body helps someone to start to learn what their body needs.
Remember, failure is not trying. If you are trying, YOU ARE NOT FAILING.
