I walked 825 miles in 2024 – wow! Going into 2024 walking daily was a huge goal for me. If you’ve been around social media lately, you’ve probably seen all the people talking about all the benefits of walking. And let me tell you, the benefits are more than just physical. I committed to this goal of walking, to enhance my overall health but what happened was so much more than that.
I’m going to be sharing 5 things I learned from walking 825 miles in 2024.
Nobody else can want health for you
You have to want your health! And that often starts with motivation. Motivation has to come from within. It can’t come from anywhere or anyone else. It starts within. Motivation comes and goes, unfortunately. My advice when this happens is to take time (it doesn’t have to be long) to reflect on why you want to be healthier and what drives you personally.
During my journey of walking 825 miles, there were days that I just didn’t care to walk. I really had to push myself to keep going because I wanted to be healthier. It was times like this that I realized that I have to want this.
Accountability is EVERYTHING
Accountability was everything for me. I used tools to track my steps that kept me motivated and excited but I also had some amazing people in my corner who knew I had a goal and helped keep me accountable. Knowing that I had people rooting me on and knowing my goal made it so much easier to keep going on the days that were hard.
If you have a goal to walk this year I would encourage you to find an accountability partner or create a system for accountability that works for you. This will make a huge difference in your overall success.
My energy + sleep has improved
One of my favorite side effects of walking 825 miles was my energy and sleep improved. As a busy mom, this was huge! My sleep has never been better. I’m going to sleep easier, staying asleep, and waking up so refreshed. Because my sleep has improved I’m more productive during the day.
If you aren’t someone who walks, I would encourage you to start with small steps to see how physical activity affects your own energy and sleep.
Less bloating
I will be honest, this one surprised me. I am so much less bloated because of this walking. What I’ve realized is that walking has improved my digestion and reduced bloating, especially during specific times of the month. The connection between movement and gut health is so powerful.
One of my favorite things is walking after I have my lunch. If you don’t walk, this would be a great place for you to start.
I am WORTH making time for
Walking 825 miles really taught me to value myself and my health. Walking and making health shifts can sometimes feel selfish because it takes time but it’s not selfish at all. Your relationships, productivity, and over well-being will thank you.
I want to encourage you to find small, intentional ways to carve out time for yourself whatever that looks like for you and your life.
Remember you are worth making time for. Your goals are important.
