My Mom’s Story: 27 Year Sober With Lynne Smith

my moms story

My mom’s story is one of overcoming. My mom, Lynne, is vibrant, full of life, maybe loves animals more than humans. Beyond her charm and humor, she is an overcomer. She has walked through incredibly difficult seasons in life, and one of the biggest parts of her story is her journey with alcoholism. She just celebrated 27 years of sobriety – an incredible milestone.

Lynne is going to share parts of her story with us to encourage others. We’ll be talking about her experience with alcohol, what led her to get sober, the struggles she faced along the way, and what life looks like for her now.

How did alcohol affect your relationships?

Lynne didn’t spend much time around her family due to her alcoholism. She explains being a nasty drunk where she would say things she didn’t mean. Overall, my mom explains how it affected her relationships so much that she didn’t have many relationships that were meaningful at all. She says she could be around many people but inside still felt so lonely.

What was the turning point that pushed you to finally stop drinking?

My mom tells a story about St. Patrick’s Day 27 years ago. Her husband had made their dinner reservations at a restaurant. She remembers walking into the restaurant and then the next thing she remembers is waking up in her bed. She explains how her husband said, “well, we will never be able to go back there again”.

When she got up that day, she walked into the bathroom, looked in the mirror, and said to herself “this isn’t going to get any better, is it?”. She then reached for the phone and called AA. She made an appointment and went in that same day. My mom wanted to get sober and she made that decision that day and never looked back.

What is something you’re most proud of when it comes to your journey?

The one thing Lynne is most proud of is that she and her son were reunited. She received a phone call from her father stating that he received a phone call from her son who she had left when he was young due to alcohol. She was able to reconnect with him and is now traveling in June to see him in the UK!

Where Lynne started and where she is now are completely different worlds. She explains it as being almost a miracle. I am so proud of her and her journey to sobriety!

If you or someone you love has struggled with addiction I hope this brings you encouragement, hope, and the reminder that change is possible.
