Most people by now have already quit their New Year goals… There are 3 reasons why this typically happens!
If you are someone who sets New Year’s goals, there’s a good chance that there has been a time where you didn’t see progress or threw in the towel.
Let’s dive into the reasons you’ve already quit your new years goals.
1. Your goals weren’t attainable or there was a lack of sustainability
When you made your goals you probably thought that if they were more extreme you would keep motivated and that’s what would keep you going. The reality is your goals require lifestyle changes and those don’t happen overnight.
I would encourage you to name checkpoints or small milestones along the way. This is something that I talk with my clients about a lot. For example, if your end goal is to lose 15lbs, what are some small milestones you can celebrate along the way? Maybe your clothes are fitting better or you aren’t dreading exercise anymore. These are still areas of growth.
Break down your BIG goals into mini-goals to celebrate along the way. This will keep you focused and encouraged! Then, focus on consistency to form those healthy habits.
2. You have no accountability
Accountability is something we ALL need but it’s hard to admit sometimes. We like to think we can do things on our own but as my friend Jack Johnson says, “I’ll tell you one thing it’s always better when we’re together”.
When we choose not to have accountability it’s easy to go on auto-pilor and sink into old habits. We really do need someone checking in on us until we can confidently do the things without having regular check-ins.
So what should you do? My biggest tip would be to find something you can share your goals with. Maybe it’s a friend, a coach, a spouse. Whoever it is, I want you to think about these things.
- Are they someone who understands the goals you are trying to reach?
- Are they willing to spend the time checking in with you?
The right accountability will help you stay consistent, honest, and supported while you move towards that end goal and remind you of the things you are doing along the way.
3. You have an all or nothing mindset
This is the one thing that I see most often that can completely derail someone. We tell ourselves that if we don’t show up perfectly or if we don’t meet our goal by a certain time that it’s not worth it or to quit.
You’ll never be perfect. Ever! If that is what you’re reaching for, you will always be left defeated. The all or nothing mindset leaves no room for grace.
How can you beat this? Whenever you start to slip into this all or nothing mindset you need to capture your thoughts with truth. You need to tell yourself why you made this goal in the first place and celebrate the wins you have seen so far. When these thoughts happen, ask yourself “What can I do today to take another step toward my goal?”
Remember, progress isn’t linear.
