Have you ever set a New Year’s resolution only to feel like you’re destined to fail before you even start? You’re not alone. So many times, we are optimistic that this year will be the year we make that change. Then, before the new year hits, we feel like it’s not possible.
I’ve dealt with this myself. I remember, 6 years ago, I really wanted to change my health. I set very specific health goals (that I had failed at in the past) and felt like this was the year. Guess what? I failed again. But, I learned something crucial to make my future goals a success.
Failure was part of my journey. I failed more times than I wanted, but overcoming that truly transformed my life and mindset.
We so badly want to change but don’t ever take the steps because we fear failing. Why is this? There are 2 things that come to mind:
- Fear of judgment from others – what will others think if they know you failed again?
- Perfectionism – if we can’t do it perfectly, why would we even try?
Past failures make us hesitant to try again but we have to change the way we think about failure. Failure isn’t the opposite of success; it’s part of the journey. I’ve seen this in my life many many times and I’ve seen this with lots of my clients.
Ready to overcome the fear of failing? Do these 3 things:
- Focus on progress, not perfection – For example, “I’ll work out everyday” turns to “I’ll move my body three times a week.” This allows you to celebrate the small wins and build momentum.
- Start with one thing – Don’t overwhelm yourself with multiple resolutions. Just pick one and get comfortable with that and then add another.
- Plan for setbacks – Set realistic expectations. Life happens, and you that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you have to stop completely and start over. Instead, have a plan for how you’ll get back on track when setbacks occur.
Resolutions are not about January 1; they are about building habits that stick year-round. Your mindset has to be in the right space (or be working towards that) so you can make the changes you wish. One way I love to do this is by replacing “I have to” with “I get to”. This helps your focus shift to that of growth.
Surround yourself with people who lift you up. People who are working on similar things are people you want in your life.
You are capable of change, no matter how many times you have tried before. You don’t have to have it all figured out right now. Start small, believe in yourself, and watch what’s possible. Let’s make this year the one where you don’t let fear hold you back!
