We are diving into how we prioritize health as a family. I have talked in the past about how I prioritize my health but I’m excited to bring a new dynamic to the conversation of what this looks like for our family. We’re going to be talking about how to support each other emotionally in different seasons, how we stay active, food choices we make, what it looks like in busy seasons of parenting and sports.
I’m not one to fluff up the conversation. I know this is hard. It’s hard to prioritize your health individually but it’s hard as a family too. Hopefully, this conversation with my husband, Nathan, will encourage you to add some of these things in or help you think about something differently than you have in the past! Let’s dive into our conversation!
How do we approach food choices as a family?
In our house, the easiest way to do this is to focus on whole foods. We try to eat foods that are in season. When we can, we choose grass-fed and organic, although that’s not a make or break when eating whole foods.
We leave room for fun foods and want to help our kids view food as fuel. They are still kids and eat goldfish and fruit snacks, as kids do. But, we try to strike a balance.
How do we stay active as a family?
We love to spend as much time outside as possible. Family walks, baseball games, soccer games, kids activities, etc. If we are outside, there are more opportunities to be active. Another thing we like to do is walk during their practices.
These things do change by season. For example, we spend time at the pool in the summer but in the winter we do more walks where we can bundle up if needed. Nathan and I try to set a good example and always keep our kids involved.
What positive changes have we noticed in our family as a result of prioritizing our health together?
So many positive changes have come from prioritizing our health together. We have more knowledge around our food choices. We do our own research about things. As a family, we are able to prioritize movement and being outside together.
We know that our health is a gift and shouldn’t be taken for granted. Oftentimes, we see our kids choosing healthier food options, which is always a win! We want to have a healthy mindset around health, movement, and nutrition. We are trying our best to help live that out so they can see that model from us as their parents.
